Depression
In India, a significant portion of the population is at risk of experiencing depression at some point in life, with the average age of onset being in the early 30s.
Causes of Depression
Depression does not have a single cause. It usually develops due to a combination of:- Social factors (such as isolation or unemployment)
- Psychological factors (such as stress or trauma)
- Biological factors (such as brain chemistry or genetics)
Types of Depression
Major (Unipolar) DepressionThis involves persistent low mood and can range from mild to severe.
Bipolar Disorder
Characterized by alternating episodes of depression and periods of elevated mood (mania).
Postpartum Depression
Affects mothers after childbirth and includes symptoms such as sadness, anxiety, fatigue, low self-confidence, and sleep disturbances. It is more serious than temporary “baby blues” and requires medical attention.
Psychotic Depression
A severe form of depression where individuals may experience hallucinations (seeing or hearing things that are not real) or delusions (strong false beliefs).
Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD)
Occurs during specific seasons, usually in winter, when exposure to sunlight is reduced.
Recurrent Depressive Disorder
Involves repeated episodes of depression over time.
